This monsoon, beware of fungal infections

The showers might tempt you to get drenched in the rain like some Bollywood movie character, but look out as a fungal infection might be your way.

Doctors are seeing a rise in fungal infection cases in the city, with ringworm infection being the most common.

Dr Nagaraj DS, Dermatologist, Jindal Charitable Hospital, said, “During this monsoon, the most common infection that the people are facing is ringworm. There has been a 10 per cent increase in ringworm. Ringworm is a fungal infection that grows in wet and moist areas. To prevent getting ringworm, avoid getting drenched in rain and carry an extra set of dresses.

Avoid wearing wet clothes for a long time.”

He added that it is extremely important for them to wash their hands with soap and water and dry themselves completely before changing into dry clothes.

Dr MN Srinivasa Murthy, a Dermatologist, said, “Fungal infections in the groin and buttocks are the most common cases. Fungal infections in the skin folds are quite common and these infections spread easily among family members. In children besides fungal infection of the scalp also known as Tinea Capitis is common.”

Doctors say that office goers are most vulnerable to such skin ailments as they have to wear the same clothes for long hours. It is important to maintain proper hygiene, take baths and u
se antifungal soaps.

Dr Maltesh M, a Dermatologist, said, “Office goers and college students are the most susceptible. They usually do not change their clothes often or bathe daily causing them these infections. It is important that they wear dry and ironed clothes and keep their environment dry and hygienic.”
