Forward fold (Uttanasana)

Part of Sun Salutations, Uttanasana is a forward bending yoga pose. The word ‘uttana’ means ‘stretched out’ and ‘asana’ refers to ‘a yoga position’. Hence, it is a yoga position that involves a forward stretch.

Steps:

*Stand erect with your feet together and arms on the sides of the body.

*While exhaling, bend forward by bending the head first. Then, bend the upper trunk and finally the lower trunk.

*Place your palms on the floor. Touch the knees with your forehead. The legs and arms should be straight. Keep the position for 30 seconds to one minute initially while breathing normally.

*Repeat the steps for three to five rounds.

Explaining the benefits of the same, Himalayan Siddhaa Akshar, Founder of Akshar Yoga Institutions said, “This practice tones up the digestive system, hence improving digestion. It also improves blood circulation to the upper part of the body,” adding that people with lower back pain, high blood pressure, cardiac issues and hernia should consult their physician before attempting the posture.

Downward facing dog pose (Adho Mukha Svasana)

It is widely known as Downward Dog Pose as it resembles the shape of a dog stretching its body.

Adho Mukha Svanasana, commonly known as Parvatasana, is a forward bending asana. It is widely known as Downward Dog Pose as it resembles the shape of a dog stretching its body.

Steps:

*Starting on all fours, make sure your palms are beneath your shoulders and your knees are below your hips.

*Then, lift your hips up, straighten your knees and elbows, and form an inverted “V.”

*Hold for eight to ten breaths while keeping your eyes on your big toes and pointing your fingers forward.

*Strive to push your heels all the way to the floor.

Akshar said, “This asana strengthens and extends your entire body. It also rejuvenates your body, eases back pain and reduces anxiety, insomnia, back pain and fatigue,” however, he stressed that if you have carpal tunnel syndrome, diarrhea, high blood pressure, a detached retina or weak eye capillaries, or are in the final trimester of your pregnancy, then avoid performing this pose.

Kapal Bhati

It is one of the six yogic purifying methods (kriyas) described in the “Hatha Yoga Pradipika”, also known as shatkarma in Sanskrit. This technique involves powerful rapid exhalations followed by short and passive inhalations.

Steps:

*Sit in any comfortable pose.

*Straighten your back and close your eyes.

*Place your palms on your knees facing up (in Prapthi Mudra).

*Inhale normally and focus on exhaling with a short, rhythmic and forceful breath.

*You can use your stomach to forcefully expel all the air from the diaphragm and lungs by compressing it.

*Inhalation should happen automatically while you decompress your stomach.

*Practice at a slow speed first.

*Repeat 2-3 times.

The yoga expert said that this asana helps reduce stress, boost brain function and improve respiratory health. “It also strengthens the abdominal muscles and improves digestion,” he added. However, Akshar advised to avoid doing Kapal Bhati if you are pregnant or menstruating.
