7 grooming tips for men that’ll make you feel confident

Remember Danny from Friends? The guy Rachel and Monica fogged because he looked like a “Yeti”? You don’t want to be that guy. With the right grooming tips for men, you never have to be.

Incorporating these simple habits in your daily routine will have you feeling more confident, healthy, attractive… in short, the best version of yourself.

In fact, more men seem to be embracing self-care. According to data gathered by market insight company Statista in 2023, the global male grooming market is expected to be worth $115 billion by 2028, up from nearly $80 billion in 2022, CNN reports. This was already up from $74.8 billion in 2021. The key drivers behind this exponential growth seems to be shifting notions of masculinity, social media and an entire deluge of new-age influencers offering grooming tips for men and normalising the idea of skincare, haircare and more.

From trimming your beard to practising skincare and getting manicures, men’s grooming is something that every man should start taking seriously.

7 grooming tips for men to make you feel like your best self

1. No one likes out-of-control hair

The current fashion landscape does support hair length of all kinds — man-buns and ponytails are a common occurrence — but that doesn’t mean that you let your hair grow long, wild and unruly. An unkempt look is never attractive. Make sure to visit your hairdresser every couple of months; every time you feel like your hair is growing out the wrong way.

2. The right kind of hair products

It’s important to note which hair products suit you. Just like in most things in life, there’s no all-size-fits-all solution to haircare. Your hair density, texture and length play a key role in this decision. Traditionally, pomades and waxes are recommended for those with thicker, unruly hair, while those with a straight and silky texture should opt for lighter products in the market.

3. A trimmed beard goes a long way

There are many reasons why men choose to keep beards, each different from the next. And while long, overgrown beards looked great on fictional characters like Professor Dumbledore and Hagrid (even Gandalf from Lord of the Rings), on us mere mortals, it just looks unseemly. Growing out your beard is great, but keep it trimmed and well-maintained. Today, there’s a whole market for beard oils, balms, moisturisers and more to browse through.

4. Clip those nails

Clipping your nails is one of the most essential grooming tips for men. Clean and trimmed nails give an overall appearance of good hygiene and discipline; an important factor for when you’re at events or meetings where it’s common to shake hands with others. You can even get the occasional manicure, which will lend them a little gleam and shine. Also, using a hand cream to keep your hands moisturised, especially during winter months, is highly recommended.

5. Add SPF to your daily routine

Constant exposure to the sun’s harmful UV rays can cause premature ageing, wrinkles, dark spots, and in more extreme cases, skin cancer. To give your skin a protective layering from the above, make sure to add sunscreen, perhaps a light SPF 30 moisturiser, into your daily grooming routine.

6. Enough of turning your underwear inside out

Many would consider this a no-brainer, but a 2020 survey by OnBy found that one in five men do not change their underwear every day. This is dangerous because it will lead to the multiplication of bacteria like Escherichia coli, staphylococcus and streptococcus in your genitals which, in turn, will cause problems like bad odour, a rash, excess itching, yeast infections, UTIs and more.

7. Find your fragrance

Despite what some popular brand advertisements tell you, emptying out a whole can of deodorant will not lure all the women of the world towards you. In fact, no one appreciates being trapped in a cloud of someone else’s perfume, fragrant as it may be. To this end, do your research and find your signature scent and use it sparingly. Instead of a dozen different cans of deodorant, lock down on at least two different colognes that compliment your style and personality.
